The foundation of any great meatball is the meat, and ground turkey serves as an ideal base. Unlike beef or pork, ground turkey is significantly lower in fat and calories, making it a heart-healthy option without sacrificing flavor. It is also rich in protein, which is essential for muscle repair and overall health. Opting for lean ground turkey helps keep the meatballs moist while providing a lighter, more nutritious alternative that appeals to a wide range of dietary preferences.

Ingredients

1 lb ground turkey

1/2 cup breadcrumbs (preferably whole wheat)

1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

3 cloves garlic, minced

1/4 cup fresh parsley, finely chopped

1/4 cup fresh basil, finely chopped

1 large egg

1 tsp onion powder

1 tsp dried oregano

1/2 tsp salt

1/4 tsp black pepper

1/4 tsp red pepper flakes (optional, for a little heat)

2 tbsp olive oil (for frying)

Marinara sauce (for serving, optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) if you plan to bake the meatballs, or prepare a frying pan for stovetop cooking.

Mix the Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the ground turkey, breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan, minced garlic, chopped parsley, chopped basil, egg, onion powder, oregano, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using). Mix gently until just combined; avoid overmixing to ensure tenderness.

Shape the Meatballs: Using your hands, form the mixture into 1-inch meatballs. You should get about 16-20 meatballs, depending on the size.

        Cook the Meatballs:

          - Baking Method: Place the meatballs on a parchment-lined baking sheet and drizzle with 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until they are golden brown and cooked through (internal temperature should reach 165°F or 75°C).

            - Stovetop Method: Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the meatballs in batches, ensuring not to overcrowd the skillet. Cook for about 6-8 minutes, turning occasionally until all sides are browned and the meatballs are cooked through.

Serve: If desired, heat marinara sauce in a small saucepan or microwave. Serve the meatballs warm with a side of marinara sauce for dipping, or place them on top of pasta, in a sub, or alongside roasted veggies.

Garnish: Sprinkle additional fresh herbs or grated Parmesan on top for a pop of color and flavor.
